Both the 420D/IT and 430D/IT are powered by the 4.0 L, four-cylinder, Cat 3054T diesel engine. The engine in the 420D/IT is rated 85 hp net at 2200 rpm, while the engine in the 430D/IT is rated 94 hp net at 2200 rpm. All engine configurations feature dry-type, Donaldson RadialSeal, two-stage air cleaners with restriction gauge and Denso Marston radiators. The 416D features a Turner Powertrain power-shuttle transmission that provides four speeds forward and reverse. The transmission uses full synchromesh in all gears to permit on the go shifting of all gears up or down. A neutral start provision prevents starting while the shuttle is engaged. The torque converter free-wheel clutch allows the converter stator to free-wheel during high-speed, low-load conditions such as roading. The forward and reverse electric power shuttle is controlled by a hand-operated lever that provides instant direction changes between forward and reverse through power hydraulic clutches.

The drivetrains of the three machines feature ZF axles. The heavy-duty rear axle features self-adjusting, oil immersed hydraulic inboard brakes, differential lock and final drives. Optional all-wheel drive (AWD) is engaged by a front console panel switch. The system can be engaged on the go, under load in any gear in forward or reverse. The system features outboard planetary gear final drives. The service brakes work with a three-position brake mode switch. The operator can select two-wheel drive and braking, two-wheel drive and all-wheel braking, or all-wheel drive and braking. The AWD and 2WD front axles are pendulum mounted and permanently sealed and lubricated requiring no daily maintenance. The front axle features a double acting steering cylinder with 50[degrees] steering angle for increased maneuverability. Axle oscillation is 11[degrees] in each direction from centerline.

Major overseas suppliers for the small, compact machines include Kubota from Japan and Ingersoll-Rand, which acquired SuperStay in the Czech Republic two years ago. Ingersoll--Rand now imports the SuperStay machines (sold previously under the EarthForce America brand name) and sells the machines under its own name as well as the Bobcat brand. In 2002, 1R and Bobcat accounted for about 9 percent of the small backhoe market -- that in the first year of marketing. In 2003, Ingersoll-Rand and Bobcat will very likely start taking share away from the leaders, which will alter the makeup of the market within 12 to 18 months. Terex used a very aggressive pricing scheme to gain market share during the year, which apparently worked successfully.
