The new D-Series includes pilot-operated joystick controls for the backhoe on every 420D and 430D. These controls are similar to hydraulic excavator controls, making the system easier to learn and use by operators while allowing smooth efficient operation, according to Caterpillar. The 420D and 430D integrated tool carriers utilize full pilot control of all hydraulic functions while the 416D only uses low effort pilot hydraulic stabilizer controls. "There are three main benefits to the new pilot control hydraulic systems," said Carman. "Lever effort is reduced and machine control is more precise, allowing operators to be more efficient. The new joystick control layout provides improved operator ergonomics and also greater visibility of the backhoe itself, allowing the operator to better see the digging." Waldon, Fairview, Okla., got into this product area three years ago when it purchased the rights to the LoDi model 815. The 815 was discontinued and replaced by a newly designed model LB25, which Waldon has been selling for the past two years. A new model, the LB30, was just released this past January and will eventually replace the LB25. Just how far will this market go? Well, consider that I thought the market would pass the 6000-unit mark about two years from now, rather than in 1999. This time, I believe demand will continue to grow through the next three or four years, with industry sales reaching an annual level of about 7000 units during that time. In some respects, backhoe loaders are going through an evolution of sorts. A decade ago, we had just standard backhoes like the Case Model 580 and Deere 310. Today, backhoes come in all sizes from small compact machines that have digging depths from 8 to 10 ft. up to the bigger standard models that dig as deep as 16 ft. The smallest machines are powered by both gasoline and diesel engines in the 20 hp range and reach about 60 lip. Their larger cousins start at about 70 lip and go up to about 115 lip. Several companies are moving into the smaller machines because of their growing popularity particularly with the rental industry and with landscape contractors.
