Hydraulic valves withstand 3,500 p.s.i. and flow rates of 25 g.p.m. Front valve uses wobble stick control; rear valves feature large handles and extra-light springs to minimize operator fatigue. High-backed seat has adjustable track, 2-position swivel lock, and retractable seat belt. Caterpillar has launched its new D-Series line of backhoe loaders with improved pilot-operated hydraulic controls heading the list of improvements. The new line, which includes the 416D, 420D and the 430D machines, is designed to replace the C- Series backhoe loaders introduced several years ago. The 420D and 430D are also available in integrated tool carrier (IT) configurations.

When we last looked at mini-backhoe loaders several years ago, the market for these machines was under 4000 units annually, but growing. Today, suppliers are selling over 6000 units and the demand keeps rolling along. The companies involved in mini-backhoes include Terramite, Allmand Brothers, Dig-It, EarthForce, Ingersoll Equipment, Kubota and Waldon. Two companies - Lely, which sold Kioti backhoes and K-D Manitou, the French manufacturer- dropped out of the market in 1999. Terramite is the recognized leader in this product and is the largest producer in the world. The company, founded in 1965, has been a family-owned, global business since its beginning. The Charleston, W.Va., company offers three models - the T5C, T5D and T6. The T5C has been around for 10 years, the T6 was introduced in 1997 and the T5D was just added in 1999. Digging depth on the smaller models is about 8 ft., while the larger T6 has a dig depth of 10 ft.

The 416D has a digging depth of 14 ft. 5 in. with the standard stick and 18 ft. 1 in. with an extendable stick. The 420D has a backhoe digging depth of 14 ft. 5 in. when equipped with the standard stick while the 430D has a digging depth of 15 ft. 3 in. with a standard stick. Extendible sticks push the 420D''s dig depth to 18 ft. 1 in. and 19 ft. 11 in. for the 430D. All three machines now feature 205[degrees] rotation of the backhoe bucket linkage, 40[degrees] more than the C-Series machines. "This new design feature makes it easier to dig vertical walls and to clamp material for truck loading," said Hershberger. In addition, the backhoe buckets now feature single pin position and all former models'' buckets and Cat work tools can be used on the D-Series. The bucket link now has an integrated lifting eye.
