Standard machine sales have typically been in the 30,000 unit range in good years. Sales have been declining since 1999 when they peaked during the last business cycle. In 2002, final sales ranged near 20,500 units, down over 35 percent in three years. For the compact backhoes, still only a fraction of the bigger machine sales yearly, demand in 2002 declined below the 5000-unit level, down about 25 percent from the peak achieved in 1999. When we last looked at mini-backhoe loaders several years ago, the market for these machines was under 4000 units annually, but growing. Today, suppliers are selling over 6000 units and the demand keeps rolling along. The companies involved in mini-backhoes include Terramite, Allmand Brothers, Dig-It, EarthForce, Ingersoll Equipment, Kubota and Waldon. Two companies - Lely, which sold Kioti backhoes and K-D Manitou, the French manufacturer- dropped out of the market in 1999. Terramite is the recognized leader in this product and is the largest producer in the world. The company, founded in 1965, has been a family-owned, global business since its beginning. The Charleston, W.Va., company offers three models - the T5C, T5D and T6. The T5C has been around for 10 years, the T6 was introduced in 1997 and the T5D was just added in 1999. Digging depth on the smaller models is about 8 ft., while the larger T6 has a dig depth of 10 ft. The new control system also includes an optional pattern changer valve on the 420D and 430D, allowing the operator to select different control patterns. "This is helpful if the machine is to be used in the rental markets," said Carman. "The feature allows the machine to be set up to match the type of control pattern with which the operator may have experience. With this feature, the operator can get on the machine and very quickly become efficient rather than having to relearn how the controls operate the machine." In the standard configuration, the 416D is powered by the naturally aspirated 4.2 L Cat 3054B diesel engine rated 75 hp net at 2200 rpm. The 4.0 L turbocharged Cat 3054T diesel engine rated 80 hp net at 2200 rpm is available as an option. Both engines are four-cylinder direct-injection units.
