The leading suppliers of the standard machines have had to make some major adjustments in production levels, and two companies (JCB in the United Kingdom and Komatsu, with production facilities in Italy) have started manufacturing their products in North America to offset rising costs firm producing machines overseas and importing them to the domestic market. JCB has a new manufacturing facility in Pooler, Ga. Komatsu has opened a new facility for utility vehicle assembly and production in Newbury, S.C. Back in 1998, only three companies made their machines in North America. Today, six out of seven companies are sourcing machines from domestic manufacturing sites. The only company importing standard machines is Terex, which acquired Fermec in the U.K. from CNH a few years back. The backhoe has a powder-coat finish in bright red and yellow. Features include: heavy-duty, self-contained frame, standard 9 HP Briggs industrial motor, balloon tires, highway-rated tires, support legs, boom arms, specially shaped bucket for increased digging, replaceable teeth, four-spool control valve, and special hydraulic cylinders. Four models are available, two of which can be towed, and two can be attached to three point hitches. Options include a choice of 9 or 12 ft. reach from boom pivot and buckets in a choice of 12 in. width for digging or an 8 in. width for trenching. Model BL70 backhoe, with 90-hp. engine, digs to depths of 14 1/2 ft. and lifts 7,619 lbs. Loader bucket holds 1.3 cu. yds. Cab boasts 360 [degrees] visibility. Choose from 2 backhoe control lever configurations. Spring-applied, pressure-released lock secures boom. Store tools, grease guns, and chains in tool box integrated in left steps. Heavy-duty, single-piece chassis tapers at front for 55 [degrees] steering angle. Integral bucket-mounted flipover pallet forks, which measure 42 ins. The new control system also includes an optional pattern changer valve on the 420D and 430D, allowing the operator to select different control patterns. "This is helpful if the machine is to be used in the rental markets," said Carman. "The feature allows the machine to be set up to match the type of control pattern with which the operator may have experience. With this feature, the operator can get on the machine and very quickly become efficient rather than having to relearn how the controls operate the machine." In the standard configuration, the 416D is powered by the naturally aspirated 4.2 L Cat 3054B diesel engine rated 75 hp net at 2200 rpm. The 4.0 L turbocharged Cat 3054T diesel engine rated 80 hp net at 2200 rpm is available as an option. Both engines are four-cylinder direct-injection units.
