EarthForce America, Summerville, S.C., is the marketing headquarters for Superstav in North America. All machines are sold in North America under the EarthForce brand nameKubota Tractor Corp. USA, an American affiliate of Kubota Corp. in Japan, offers two models of mini-backhoe loaders, the B21 and L35. The company is second in the marketplace and imports its machines from Japan. KTC, which started selling machines in the U.S. market in 1972, is headquartered in Torrance, Calif. The company''s B21 machine is rated 21 hp and features hydrostatic drive, while the L35 is rated 35 hp and has a mechanical Glide Shift transmission for clutchless shifting. The bigger machine has a 9 ft. digging depth. Ingersoll Equipment (not to be confused with Ingersoll-Rand Co.) is located in Winneconne, Wis. The company started producing small backhoe loaders in 1983. Current models include 18 hp and 20 hp machines and a larger addition is being discussed for 2001. Both the 6018 BH and 6020 BH loaders have a digging depth of 7.5 ft. and both machines are very light at less than 3000 lb.

Front and rear work lights and center-mount steering are standard features. The T7 is equipped with Super Terra Grip front and rear tires for better traction and maneuverability. It also has a 180 degree swing on the backhoe. T5C features quick-change backhoe buckets in 8- to 38-in. sizes with 1/2-in. thick carbon cutting edges and cast steel replacement teeth. Digs to 8 ft., 4 in.

Waldon, Fairview, Okla., got into this product area three years ago when it purchased the rights to the LoDi model 815. The 815 was discontinued and replaced by a newly designed model LB25, which Waldon has been selling for the past two years. A new model, the LB30, was just released this past January and will eventually replace the LB25. Just how far will this market go? Well, consider that I thought the market would pass the 6000-unit mark about two years from now, rather than in 1999. This time, I believe demand will continue to grow through the next three or four years, with industry sales reaching an annual level of about 7000 units during that time.
